What is SwiftLadies? How did I get here?

SwiftLadies is a global community of Lady Apple Developers. It began in Manila and hopefully, it will spread around the world.

Swift PH is a community of iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS developers in the Philippines. It started in July 2017 in Manila.

Without further ado, how did I get here? I joined the Swift PH (Manila, Philippines) Meetup group around September last year (2017). But I haven't attend any meetups since then due to my busy schedule. I just participated this January of 2018.

What motivated me to join this group is my desire to socialize with my co-developers, who love programming as much as I do. Also, I want to contribute something to the community. Let me quote something:

Learning is a never ending process. I want to be part of the community to learn and to share something even though I'm already a working professional. :)

I'm very happy that I became part of the 1st SwiftLadies meetup. It was my first time to speak in a public tech meet-up composed of around 30 people. I did learn from them and I do hope that they learned also from me.

Thank you so much! :)

ESGS (E-Sport and Gaming Summit) is a yearly event and also one of the biggest gaming events in South-east Asia.

For this year's event (2017), it happened last October 27-29 at SMX Convention Center (Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines). The tickets were available on-site as well as online through SMTickets.com. The ticket prices differ on the first day and the last 2 days: October 27 (Php 170), October 28 (Php 210) and October 29 (Php 210).

Here's the program for this year's event:

I wasn't able to go on the first two days but I was glad that I went to the last day of the event. It was actually my first time to attend such event because I'm not a game enthusiast. 😅   My boyfriend invited me to go because they have a designated booth.

Here's the floorplan of the event:

This is me! Excited to see what's inside...

Are you ready? Here's the glimpse of the event:

After years in a technology field, I decided to back-up all my files in my laptop. It took me years before I finally decided to get an external hard drive.

I chose Seagate because it's a reliable brand. Seagate finally launched an external hard drive that suits to my needs: super handy, sleek design and compatible with multi-platform: Windows and Mac. There's more! I can back-up from mobile device! It supports also Android 3.0 or higher and iOS 8 or higher. Just go to Google Play or App Store and download the Seagate Backup app.

It also comes with 200 GB Cloud Storage. How cool right?

The package comes with a hard drive, usb cable and a manual
Slimmer than a Mac Mini

Note: This is not a sponsored post. I bought this using my own money. :)

How about you? Do you have an external hard drive? If yes, what's your favorite brand? Share your thoughts here.

One of my bucket list is to learn at least 3 languages. I'm talking about languages (read, write, speak) and not programming languages, which is my line of work. Haha. :)

Last July 2013 (4 years ago), I enrolled myself on a 40-hour Mandarin class. I studied Mandarin after my work (7 pm - 9 pm) every Tuesdays and Thursdays. Everything went well. I learned a lot from my classes but I wasn't able to practice or use it on my line of work. I didn't take another language class after due to my stressful work.

When I resigned from my work in Makati and decided to work in Alabang area, I decided to go back and learn new language. Last December 2015 (almost 2 years ago), I discovered an app that suits my interest. The app is named as "Duolingo". It is totally free but it offers in-app purchases.

Since I'm currently working in a French IT company, I started learning about French language. I'm not yet fluent to begin with but I can understand few words like "Bonjour", "Bon Appetit", "Femme", "Homme", etc. Here are some exercises that I did using Duolingo app:

My main goal is to practice once a day. I'm currently enrolled in French, Spanish and Japanese language courses.

You can follow me here: https://www.duolingo.com/ulyssaelaine

I'm planning to add more soon but I will focus first on the 3 languages mentioned.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. I didn't own / code the app itself. I'm just sharing my own experience using this app.

How about you? Have you tried using the app? Do you also have an interest learning a new foreign language? Share your thoughts.

Last January 20 - 23, my family along with my relatives went to Singapore for a 4-day trip to celebrate my aunt's 60th birthday. I have been to Singapore three years ago with them also (except for my Mom and my sister) and the place is still familiar to me. At that time, I just relied our travel to my cousins because I was a first-timer and recently turned 21 at that time (such a baby). This time my Mom and my sister trusted and relied to me because my sister and I managed to travel alone to South Korea (without our parents). Thank you! :)

Moving forward, I want to share the apps that I used to survive on our 4-day SG trip.

Explore Singapore MRT (left), Google Maps (center), Uber (right)

1. Explore Singapore MRT map - The app was developed by Explore Metro and was recommended by Lonely Planet and CNN. The app has a street maps of every station and a route planner to check what stations to take and how many stations to get there.

What I love from the app is you can check if even in offline mode, which means without internet connection. How cool, right? Internet connection in SG is a bit pricey though. I have saved a few bucks without getting lost. :)

Got this screenshots from App Store:

You can download the app in App Store and Google Play.

2. Google Maps - The app was developed by Google Inc. I guess everyone is familiar with this app so I won't elaborate it more. If the app mentioned above helps to find the MRT routes, this app helps me to check the whole place (around the area stores, hotels, landmarks, etc.). It is very useful. :)

You can download the app in App Store and Google Play.

3. Uber - The app was developed by Uber Technologies, Inc. There's no need to wait for a taxi because with Uber, you can book a ride hassle-free.

Note: Uber in SG is a bit pricey compared in Manila but it's safe.

You can download the app in App Store and Google Play.

Note: This is not a sponsored post. I'm just sharing my experience with the apps.

How about you? Did you use any apps when you travelled here? Share your experience.

GDG DevFest is an annual community-organized event that showcases the Google technologies and other developer products.

Photo from GDG Philippines

It was the biggest Google tech conference in the Philippines. For this year, they talked about new technologies such as Android Nougat, Firebase, Progressive Web Apps, Google Cloud, Polymer and many more.

I was very lucky to experience this one-of-a-kind event in the Philippines and it's free! :)

I was able also to tag along my sister for this event. She was able to see and experience what it's like be on my field.

How about you? Have you attended the event? Share your experience.
